School Girl Sampler Help? and Coverlet

I recently came across this antique 1840 school girl sampler.I plan to have it framed and hang it it the living room.We don't come across these often in our area especially local ones so I don't know alot about them.I'm hoping one of you girls that collect them can tell me were you begin your research on the history or if you even bother since the family name and year is there. Is there anything special I should look at it in the lettering or symbols? Also what is the price range this should be valued at? It's aprox 18 inches both ways.I've wanted one of these for years and can't wait to get it hung. Close up of the name and date...

I also came across this coverlet. It's local as well and dated 1844. Measures 6 1/2 feet. Not sure if I'll keep this piece or not.I don't know how to care for it properly or display it. That it's local makes me think I should hang onto it but it just doesn't "catch" me yet.LoL. at over 170 years old they are both beautiful pieces of history....

Thanks ahead of time for any info on the sampler. If you feel better emailing me my info is on the sidebar. Hope everyone is staying cozy.Warm Blessings!~Amy

Hi Amy,
Beautiful finds! Maybe go to the library and get a book on the history of old samplers. It will look great framed and hung in your home. The coverlet is nice maybe hung on a blanket crane. I would not try to wash it or anything. Two great pieces of local history.
Have a great day~hugs~ Jean

Amy,
I've never researched any of my samplers. Is it marked with your county that you know it is local? If so, maybe check with the local historical society? Value? Hard to say. I've gotten an antique sampler for under $100 but is not dated with names. Many samplers I see are in the $400-$700 range. Those without damage can be much more.
Oh, keep the coverlet piece. They are wonderful draped over an antique cupboard door or chair.
Hugs :)

I'm not an expert on samplers, but it should be either stitched on silk or linen. If you decide to sell the coverlet, I might be interested. I love them. Great finds!!! Janice

Hi, Amy, what wonderful treasure you have found. I love them both, and definitely keep the coverlet. I see the name on the coverlet, does it have a place listed? I have lots of book on antique samplers, I will look and see if I can find those alphabets. What unusual names, I don't know where you live, but I see there is a crown and deer on the sampler.

Amy, both of your treasures are wonderful. One thing I remember about samplers is that before a certain date they did not stitch a J in their alphabets. I don't remember the date that they started using it. Something about the letter J was interchanged with the letter I , I think. See I have all of this useful information and can't remember half of it! Anyhow check that out and see if you find out anything.

Oh Amy You lucky, lucky girl. I can't help date the sampler but agree with the gals that said contact Brenda With My Needle and Thread. I just love the sampler being that I'm addicted to stitching samplers but have never been able to find any antique ones in my area that I could afford. They seem to range from the $400 to $2500 in this area so way outside my budget. And the coverlet is just amazing! I have just started to collect them (4 that I got at estate sales) so I'm still learning about them. I have mine stacked on a bench at the end of my bed for now. I hope as my collection grows it will "require" a pie safe to display them in. ;)

Love them both! Wow you scored sweetie! I hope you don't cut up the coverlet, it makes me sad when people do that so they can sell several pieces. Just my personal opinion. Enjoy your historical finds!
